Meadow PC from Kent won the Pétanque England EuroCup competition for the third year in a row last weekend at Worthing. The squad of 8 players proved why they are the best in the country by beating all of the other three finalist clubs over 9 matches across Saturday 16th & Sunday 17th August. The host venue was Worthing Pétanque Club, which is famous for a variety of challenging and technical pistes.
The EuroCup match format is made up of 6 singles, 3 doubles and 2 triples games, featuring open and mixed gender teams. Each singles game is worth 2 points, doubles 3 points and triples 5 points, meaning there is a total of 31 points on offer for each fixture. Meadow showed their class in the first match on Saturday, with a resounding 31-0 victory over River Hamble PC from Southern region. They continued that form on Saturday afternoon with a 29-2 win against Bargeman’s Rest PC from the Isle of Wight. Also on Saturday afternoon, River Hamble PC bounced back from their morning disappointment with a brilliant 19-12 win against Baldock Town PC.
This meant that the usual showdown between Meadow PC & Baldock Town PC on the Sunday was not necessarily a “winner takes all” clash, as has been the case for the last 2 years. Baldock’s loss, with the way the EuroCup tie breaker works, meant that Meadow just needed 5 match points to guarantee they would finish in 1st place. Baldock came out of the blocks strong, wining the first 3 singles matches, to take a 6-0 lead in the tie. However Meadow rallied and showed their strength by winning the remaining 3 doubles to make the match score 6-6 and give them the points needed to secure the EuroCup win! Meadow went on to eventually beat Baldock 19-12 and secure the clean sweep of wins.
The European finals of the EuroCup competition take place at the magnificent Boulodome do Douaisis in Northern France in November. We wish Meadow PC and their players the very best of luck on the international stage!
