The KPA Veterans Doubles competition held at Lordswood on 10th May, was well supported with 34 players playing in 17 doubles teams. Weather was dry but with a cold breeze from the North. The format of the day was 4 leagues and timed games of 1 hour duration in the morning, with league 4 unfortunately including a bye. After a short break for lunch the afternoon comprised Gold and Silver Knockout with no Consolage due to the adverse weather conditions, as voted for by the competitors.

Two teams had a play off game with the first team to 7 points taking the 16th and final place, after points for, against and difference being identical! The winners eventually progressed to be Silver champions in the afternoon. It was good to see some unfamiliar players and teams in the awards. The Gold knockout section saw some remarkably close games that could have seen different outcomes, as we all know, pétanque is about fine margins sprinkled with some luck on the day.

Lanes in the morning were allocated on a toss and choose basis, with rounds taking part on odd and even numbered pistes respectively, the afternoon knockout was purely toss and choose any lane. Many thanks to Lordswood, namely Gavin, Suzie and Clive for their hosting and hospitality on the day, with pistes 1 to 16 providing variety, challenge, and interesting games.

Feedback on the day was incredibly positive, look out for the next KPA event and get your entries in!
