The Kent Juniors had a great day at the Pétanque England Singles and Shooting Championships on Saturday 13th July, held at Leicester Petanque Club.

Eighteen juniors entered the competition. In the singles, the morning saw the juniors split into four leagues, three of four players and one of six – the six girls were put into the league of six to help the coaches in selection for the upcoming European Championship. The top two from each league went through to the quarter finals, with the remaining players going into the silver.

James and Zac were drawn in the same league, alongside Mathew from Southern and Ethan from Central regions, both of whom are strong competitors, and like James, in contention for selection for the Euros.

The Kent boys showed their pétanque prowess in the league stages, Zac finished on 3 out of 3 wins and topped the league, with James finishing on 2 wins, losing 1 game to Zac and sitting in second place. Both boys were through to the quarter finals. In the girls league, Tegan also won 3 out of 3, only finishing in 2nd place by a small margin of just 3 points difference.

The quarter finals saw Zac lose to the eventual runner-up in a fairly close game, while Tegan lost 9-13 against Charlie from Heart of England. James had an amazing 13-0 win against Alex from Mercia and moved into the semi-finals.

Tegan was then drawn against Zac in their next game, which Tegan won.

James was drawn against Connor from Great Western, again James played some amazing boules and won comfortably 13-1, and moved in to the final.

Zac was in the 7/8th place play off against Aimee from Southern who had pipped Tegan to the top of the girls league in the morning, after a great start to the day Zac ended the day in a very respectable 8th place.

Tegan was in the 5/6th place play off against Alex from Mercia, Tegan played some good boule but was out pointed by Alex. Tegan finished the day in 6th place and was the highest placed girl.

James’s opponent for the final was Cole from Mercia. Again, James showed great skill in pointing and shooting to take the game 13-5! James is Pétanque England Junior Singles Champion 2024.

Congratulations James what an achievement – having dropped just 6 points in the 3 knock out games!

In the Junior Shooting Championship, Tegan scored a personal best score of 16 in the qualifying round, which put her in 2nd place behind Nathan of Chiltern who scored 18.

In the final Tegan again beat her personal best, which included removing the jack at 9m. Tegan ended the final beating Nathan 19-9 to take the Pétanque England Junior Shooting Championship 2024!

All in all, a great day for the Kent Pétanque Junior Squad, with all 3 players making a top 8 finish.
